West Lake and East Lake are connected, but owning a home on each can feel different. I’ve lived on both, and I’d choose between them based less on which lake someone says is “better” and more on how you want to use your place in Okoboji.

If you’re comparing West Lake and East Lake, don’t reduce the decision to a list of house features.

Think about where you’ll boat, where friends and family tend to gather, whether you like the character of an older lake property or prefer something newer, and how much you’re comfortable investing in the location.

I’ve lived on West Lake, East Lake and Center Lake. Each has its own feel. The right choice is the one that fits the way you expect to spend your time here.

West Lake Okoboji

Clear water, deep water and generations of lake history.

West Lake is the picture many people have in mind when they think about classic Okoboji. Its deep, clear water is a major part of the attraction, and you’ll find plenty of older cabins and long-established lake homes mixed with remodeled and rebuilt properties.

West Lake properties also tend to command higher prices, so buyers should think carefully about how much value they place on being directly on this lake.

If you expect to spend most of your boating time on West Lake, think about the bridge.

East and West are connected, so owning on one doesn’t mean you’re confined to that lake. But connected isn’t the same thing as being in exactly the same place.

Moving by boat between East and West means passing through the connecting area and under the bridge. Depending on lake traffic, that can involve waiting.

If your ideal Saturday is mostly spent boating West Lake, that’s worth considering before choosing an East Lake property simply because you like the house. If you don’t mind the transition between lakes, it may matter much less.
