Finding Your Place on East Lake Okoboji
I’ve lived on East Lake, and I don’t think you should look at it as “West Lake’s alternative.” It has its own reasons to live there. If you’re considering East, I’ll help you think through the home, the waterfront and how the location fits the way you actually spend time in Okoboji.
Don’t begin by asking what East Lake isn’t.
Start by asking whether it works for the way you want to live at the lake.
Where do you want to spend your time? What kind of home are you looking for? How important is boating? Where are your friends and family? Are you coming for weekends, spending most of the summer here or eventually making this a bigger part of your life?
Those questions matter more to me than trying to turn East and West into competing teams.
I’ve lived on both. They’re connected parts of the same Okoboji life, but owning on one isn’t exactly the same as owning on the other.
The right question isn’t “Is East as good as West?” It’s “Does East fit us better?”
That gives me a different perspective than simply knowing where it is on a map.
When you’ve lived on a lake, you start thinking about the little routines that don’t show up in a listing.
Where are you going when you pull away from the dock? How often will you have friends coming over? Is the property somewhere you’ll use constantly or primarily on weekends?
And what matters most when you’re back at the house—the view, the shoreline, outdoor space, an easy place for everyone to gather, or simply being on the water?
I want to understand those things because that’s how we get from “this is a nice house” to “this is the right lake place for us.”
Here’s what I want us thinking about while we look.
Every East Lake property is its own decision. I don’t want the lake name to substitute for looking carefully at the actual place you’re buying.
How does this property meet the water?
Let’s walk down to the shoreline instead of admiring it only from the house. Think about how you’ll get to the water, where people will sit, how you’ll use the dock area and whether the setup fits your family.
Where do you expect to boat most often?
East is part of the connected Iowa Great Lakes system. If your normal routine will take you toward other parts of the chain regularly, I want that to be part of the location decision rather than something you think about after you’ve bought.
What kind of house do you actually want?
Some buyers are looking for the feeling of an older lake place. Others want a more updated home with fewer projects. Tell me which matters more before we start making compromises for the wrong reasons.
Are you buying for weekends or for longer stretches?
A property can feel very different when you’re staying for two nights versus most of the summer. Storage, outdoor space, guests, parking and how the house functions day to day become more important the longer you’re there.
What can’t you change later?
I want us paying close attention to the site, shoreline, view, access and location. You can make plenty of changes to a house. Some of the most important parts of a lake property come with the ground it sits on.
If you’re unsure, that’s completely fine.
You don’t need to choose a lake before you call me.
I’ve lived on East and West, and I’d rather hear how you spend your time than tell you where you’re supposed to buy.
If your friends, family and boating routine are centered around West, that matters. If the type of property you want leads us toward East, that matters too.
Maybe we look at both for a while. Sometimes actually walking properties and getting down to the water makes the answer much clearer than trying to decide from a computer.

Part of choosing a home here is understanding how it fits into everything else you love doing around Okoboji.
You may boat to see friends. You may spend an afternoon around Arnolds Park. You may head out for dinner, music or simply take the boat out with nowhere particular to go.
That’s why I keep coming back to the same question: what does a normal summer day look like for you?
Once I understand that, it’s much easier to talk intelligently about whether East Lake—and which part of East Lake—belongs in your search.

Is East Lake connected to the other Iowa Great Lakes?
East Okoboji is part of the connected Iowa Great Lakes system. If you expect to move around the chain frequently by boat, we’ll talk about your normal route and how much that should influence where you buy.
Is East Lake shallower than West Lake?
Yes. East and West have very different physical characteristics. I don’t think depth alone tells you where to buy, though. The specific property, shoreline and the way you want to use the lake matter more than comparing one number.
Should I consider East if I’ve always vacationed on West?
Absolutely consider it. That doesn’t mean you should automatically buy there. If West is where your family, friends and traditions are centered, I want to respect that. But seeing what East offers can help you make the decision with your eyes open rather than assuming there’s only one option.
What should I look at when touring an East Lake home?
I want to understand the house, but I also want us outside. Look at the shoreline, dock area, view, outdoor living space and how the property works when everybody is there. Those are a big part of what you’re buying.
